Manufacturing of the AVO Cigars


	The Cibao valley is the best area for the cultivation of tobacco plants in the Dominican Republic. The slightly sandy, fertile soils and the ideal mild climate with the right amount of rain combine perfectly to allow the solanum species to flourish in the valley situated between the Cordillera Central and the Cordillera Septentrional.

Before being set out in the fields, the seedlings are checked for uniform growth by experienced planters, the vegueros.

Only the finest and healthiest young plants are allowed to cover the Cibao valley with greenery and to grow on into tobacco plants able to meet the subsequent quality requirements for an AVO tobacco composition.

The growth of the plants is constantly monitored. In this way, just as Avo Uvezian would wish, discords are avoided right from the start.


	As soon as the leaves of the plants have reached the perfect size, and above all the right degree of ripeness, the harvest starts. The harvest season is mostly in January, extending over four to six weeks. The tobacco leaves are harvested expertly by the vegueros, before being dried for several months in typical ranchos and later fermented in storerooms.


The drying and fermentation of the tobacco leaves are processes which require many years of experience and know-how. After drying in the ranchos the leaves are stacked in layers in storerooms and regularly moistened. If temperature and a specified degree of ripeness are correct, the tobacco is restacked. The fermentation determines the aroma, taste and burning quality of the tobacco.

Tabaqueros compose the fine blends which make AVO cigars so unmistakable. But what would the finest tobacco blend be without the virtuosity of the torcedores – the cigar rollers

No machine operates as harmoniously as the interplay of human hand and human eye. Selected wrappers, artistically cut to size, are rolled around the blended filling and the outer leaf, applying the optimum pressure. The experienced rollers give the cigars their shape and uniform strength, which guarantees perfect pleasure, pull after pull.

In the final stage the AVOs are cut, selected for colour, given their handsome band, and carefully packed. Cigars in perfect harmony – from the sowing of the tobacco seed right through to the smoke rings which delight the connoisseur.
